The method involves using all traffic inflows and outflows to a road section to determine the instantaneous flow balance (u) per unit time. The instantaneous flow balance is integrated with a disturbance bordering function to yield an estimation for the traffic quantity (y). From this quantity, travel time, velocity or traffic state indicators are determined, and from the previous values information about the traffic system are produced and transferred to participating drivers.
