Device for applying a layer on a support strip (7) comprises a roll coater (1) with a melting bath for the metal to be applied using a cropping roller (3). A measuring roller (4) controls the thickness of the coating (6) and an application roller (5) interacts with the support strip. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the application of the metal coating using the above device. Preferred Features: The support strip is a steel strip and the metal coating consists of a soft solder for heavy metals such as zinc. The rollers (3, 5) and their working surfaces are made from corrosion-resistant material such as high grade steel, e.g. chromium-nickel alloy.
