A server (WS1) forms part of a packet-oriented data network (NW). A memory (S1) stores program code for telephony applications. A telephone interface (TU) connects the data network to telephone lines. Devices convert voice signals received via the telephone lines into digital signals and convert digital signals into voice signals to be sent out over the telephone lines. A program-controlled telephone interface (TI) operates the converting devices. An Independent claim is also included for a telephone interface for the present invention.
