The method involves using a torque model to compute at least one actual torque value and/or control parameter depending on a demand value. The model contains at least one base value determined under defined standard conditions and corrected for the current engine operating state. The base parameter is at least one of a corrected optimal torque or a corrected optimal ignition angle. The method involves using a torque model to compute at least one actual torque value and/or at least one control parameter depending on a default value, whereby the model contains at least one base value determined under defined standard conditions and corrected for the current engine operating state. The base parameter is at least one of an optimal torque corrected for inert gas rate and charge movement effects or an optimal ignition angle corrected depending on inert gas rate and charge movement effects and the current engine operating point. Independent claims are also included for the following: the torque model for an IC engine, computer program and computer program product for controlling an internal combustion engine.
