Production of colored and effect multicoat coatings comprises: (a) applying pigmented coating composition(s) containing effect pigment(s) to an (un)primed substrate and drying without complete hardening; (b) applying pigmented coating composition(s) containing transparent colored pigment(s) and drying without complete hardening; (c) applying unpigmented coating composition(s); and (d) hardening all coats together. Production of colored and effect multicoat coatings by applying = 2 pigmented coating materials to an (un)primed substrate and hardening the pigmented coats comprises: (a) producing pigmented coat(s) (A) by applying pigmented coating composition(s) (A) containing effect pigment(s) to the (un)primed substrate and drying coat(s) (A) without complete hardening; (b) producing pigmented coat(s) (B) by applying pigmented coating composition(s) (B) containing transparent colored pigment(s) to the outer surface of coat(s) (A) and drying coat(s) (B) without complete hardening; (c) producing unpigmented coat(s) (C) by applying unpigmented coating composition(s) (C) to the outer surface of pigmented coat(s) (B); and (d) hardening all coats together.
