The lifting barrier (1) may be of wooden or word and plastics construction. It moves up through a slot with guide jaws (26) and rests on a square-section float (2) inside a chamber (3). A projection on the top of the float engages jaws (8) on the bottom edge of the barrier. Inlets (23,24) near the top of the bank are submerged when the water level (19) rises to a dangerous level, filling the chamber and raising the barrier. The chamber may be drained via a channel (20), a drainpipe (21) and a valve (22).
