Production of wear resistant layers in regions of components close to the surface comprises using a laser nitriding treatment in which energy is applied to the surface so that a re-melting layer forms in the regions close to the surface and nitrogen from a nitrogen atmosphere or from the air is reacted with aluminum of the component to form aluminum nitride in a finely dispersed manner in the re-melting layer. An Independent claim is also included for the component produced by the process. Preferred Features: The composite material of the component is made from an aluminum matrix and an incoherent reinforcing phase made from oxides, carbides, nitrides or borides in an amount of 15-25, preferably 20-40 wt.%. An excimer or Nd:YAG laser is used in the process.
