Rapid prototyping of miniature plastics components, e.g. for micro-fluid applications, uses a computer-controlled printer to apply a polymer mixture to a carrier in structured layers where polymer components can be removed. For rapid prototyping of shaped plastics components for specific functions e.g. in micro-fluid applications, a layer is applied to a carrier by an ink jet or needle printer using a mixture of at least two polymers which can be removed chemically or physically after setting. When the layer is set, a second layer is applied which bonds to it, and the process is repeated until the required structure is achieved. The layers are set by light or heat.
