In a process to desalinate ion-contaminated water, especially following the main charge process water which is required for anion-exchanger regeneration is produced by the ion-exchanger. This regeneration water is then stored in one or more supplementary tanks. The ion exchanger is washed clean following its regeneration with partly desalinated water from the supplementary tanks. When the resulting waste water conductivity reaches a value approximately that of raw water, it is discharged to the supplementary tanks. Regeneration of the cation- and anion-exchangers is simultaneous wit that of the partly desalinated water from the supplementary tanks. Regeneration of the cation exchanger with contaminated raw water and the regeneration of the anion-exchanger with the partly desalinated water from the supplementary containers is simultaneous and parallel.
