The inside of the groove-allotted (13) piston ring (11,12) has a hard or rough structured surface which is pressed against the deposit (15) as the piston switches and in this way bursts the deposit off. The inside face of the ring has raised parts (17) spread all over it and produced by grooves (16) set at an acute angle to the inside casing face of the ring and in this way giving rise to sharp-edges (17). The grooves (16) run round the ring. The raised parts can be spread in groups or singly over the ring face. The raised parts can also be produced by chemical vapor deposition onto a rough hard surface or by spatter technique.
