Non-toxic urease inhibitors comprising 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexaamino-diphosphazenium salts, useful e.g. for preventing loss of nitrogen from urea-based fertilizers or for reducing ammonia formation in animal stalls

The use of 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexaamino-diphosphazenium salts (I) for inhibiting or regulating enzyme-catalyzed hydrolysis of urea, is new. The use of 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexaamino-diphosphazenium salts of formula (I) for inhibiting or regulating enzyme-catalyzed hydrolysis of urea, is new: R1 - R12 = H, 1-8C alkyl, 2-8C alkenyl, 3-8C cycloalkyl, 6-10C aryl or heteroaryl; or two of R1 - R12 on the same N may together form alkylene or alkenylene completing a 3-6 membered ring (optionally containing further heteroatom(s) such as O, N or S); X- = anion selected from halide, phosphate, nitrate, sulfate, (bi)carbonate, hexahalophosphate, perchlorate, tetrahaloborate, tetraphenylborate, R'COO- and R'SO3-; and R' = 1-6C alkyl, 3-8C cycloalkyl or 6-10C aryl. An Independent claim is included for a composition (A) comprising (I) and urea-based mineral and/or organic fertilizers (II).
