The method involves determining a spray cloud (38) parameter, computing the fuel injection spray cloud characteristics using the parameter, comparing with predetermined characteristics and setting at least one fuel injection characteristic accordingly to vary the spray cloud characteristic so that it approximates more closely to the predetermined one. AN Independent claim is also included for the following: a system for reducing emissions from an engine and a method of reducing emissions from an engine during a cold start.
