An ionic current detector (30) detects ionic current flowing during combustion of air-fuel mixture and a leakage current detector detects leakage current flowing across electrodes of spark plug at two different timings respectively. A firing state discriminator discriminates firing state of an engine based on outputs of the ionic current detector and leakage current detector. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a firing state discriminating method for an internal combustion engine; and (2) a computer program for discriminating firing state of internal combustion engine.
