A surface acoustic wave device has a surface acoustic wave element, a housing and a housing electrode. The surface acoustic wave element has a piezoelectric substrate, an interdigital transducer, an electrode contact pad, an intermediate electrode, an upper electrode and a bump electrode. The intermediate electrode is made of NiCr, which contains 15 to 30 weight percent Cr. The electrode contact pad and the upper electrode are made of Al. The bump electrode is pressurized to the case electrode with an ultrasonic wave or heat applied to the bump electrode. The resulting surface acoustic wave device has excellent characteristics and shows no detachment of the surface acoustic wave element from the case during a drop test.
