Production of structured hydrophobic surfaces with elevations and depressions comprises depositing a polyhedral oligomeric silicon-oxygen cluster compound on a surface to form the elevations. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a structured hydrophobic surface with elevations and depressions, where the elevations are formed from polyhedral oligomeric silicon-oxygen clusters; (2) antireflective glass and plastic surfaces having a surface as above; (3) a wash-resistant coating with hydrophobic and self-cleaning properties produced by the process of (1).
