Two folding mechanisms (11, 12) have gripping mechanisms (13, 16) and pushing mechanisms (14, 15) that act together to introduce a part of the web material (10) into the gripping mechanisms. The mechanisms are capable of moving the web material alternately to one side or the opposite side of a block of folded material. Pressing mechanisms (17, 20) beneath the folding mechanisms press on the uppermost web layer on opposite sides of the block, pressing on one side of the block while the web material is layered down on the other side of the block. The opening and closing of the gripping mechanisms is controlled by a first (136) and a second cam (138) respectively. An independent claim is also included for a method of forming a package unit using the apparatus.
