The coupler includes a semiconductor device (6) attached to a conductive sub-mount (5) having a section (8) for accommodating a bonding wire (9). The sub-mount is attached to the surface of a commercially-available conductive TO-package base. The section (8) of the sub-mount lies above an insulated connection pin (4) of the TO (transistor outline)-package base, and the pin is connected to the semiconductor device via a bonding wire (9). The optical end section of the semiconductor device is recessed in a sleeve-like coupling element (2) which receives the package base and is centered on the sub-mount, so that the end of the optical fiber lies opposite the semiconductor device.
