A ballast system for a mobile crane has a split ballast weight for fitting to the rear of the turntable support for the crane boom, in the working position. The vehicle is fitted with a ballast hoist (5) which lifts sections of the ballast weight to fit onto the front (7) and rear (8) of the chassis. The hoist fits the weights with a vertical and translational movement to slide the weights onto the chassis supports. The chassis mounting spreads the weight of the ballast between the front an rear axles and lowers the centre of gravity of the vehicle.
