A vertical stand pipe (2) inside a drain, preferably a standard drainage pipe made from plastic, acts as an overflow (1) and has openings provided around its circumference at different levels. Some or all of these openings can be sealed by sliding a sleeve (5) over the stand pipe, in order to regulate the pond level and drainage rate. A sludge removal pipe which can sealed with a cover is located at a deeper level than the stand pipe, in the foot of the pond embankment, and combines with the stand pipe to form a drain. The difference in levels between the two pipes creates a sludge removal basin in the pond and once the pond water has been drained away, the combination of the pipes is used to suck out the sludge residue.
