The method enables both transmission and emission measurements to be made in a short time interval as well as measurement of the spatial distribution of pressure, temperature and gas concentration along two directions that are perpendicular to the exhaust gas flow and each other with an adjustable step length. One light source is cooled so that it can be used for emission measurements, while the other is heated to a temperature above that of the exhaust gases so that it can be used for transmission measurements. A mirror arrangement (1-5) enables the infrared light position to be moved across the exhaust gas flow. The light is detected by an infrared measurement device (6).
