Rearing the parasitic wasp Trybliographa rapae, for use in biological control of Delia flies, especially cabbage flies, by producing fly larvae in cruciferous vegetables then infesting with wasp larvae
A method for rearing the wasp Trybliographa rapae involves: (a) producing larvae of flies of genus Delia, by (i) allowing male and female flies access to a portion of a root of a cruciferous vegetable resting in sand and (ii) hatching the eggs to give larvae; and (b) producing wasp pupae, by (i) cutting the root portion into fragments, (ii) contacting with wasp males and females, which deposit their eggs into the fly larvae and (iii) placing the fragments in sand and allowing the eggs to proceed to the larva and pupa stages. A method for rearing the parasitic wasp Trybliographa rapae involves: (a) producing larvae of flies of genus Delia, by (i) allowing male and female flies in a container access to a laying support comprising at least one hemispherical portion of a root of a cruciferous vegetable resting on its flat face in a bed of sand and (ii) transferring the support, together with the bed, into a second container, where the eggs hatch to give larvae; and (b) producing wasp pupae, by (i) cutting the root portion into fragments, each having at least two flat faces, (ii) transferring the fragments into a third container containing male and female wasps, which deposit their eggs into the fly larvae, (iii) transferring the fragments into a fourth container, placing the fragments in a bed of sand and allowing the eggs to proceed to the larva and pupa stages and (iv) recovering at least some of the wasp pupae.
