PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the origin time of earthquake substantially at the same time of an earthquake occurring using a simple method and a simple device, and predict the hypocentral distance and magnitude of the earthquake in a short time before the coming of an earthquake wave.;SOLUTION: A device for predicting the origin time of earthquake, hypocentral distance and magnitude based on the time series of data on measured values of the electrical field intensity observed due to an earthquake motion comprises measurement means 21, 22 which measure the electric field intensity, data storage means 24, 25 which collect and store the data on the values measured by the measurement means, and data analysis means 26 which analyzes the data on the measured values stored in the data storage means to detect the origin time of earthquake based on the electrical field rise starting time, thereby predicting the hypocentral distance and magnitude of the earthquake based on the elapse time from the origin time of earthquake and the data on the measured values. The device measures the electrical field intensity at a point where natural noises and artificial noises are few, and analyzes the measurement data, thereby predicting the origin time of earthquake, hypocentral distance and magnitude of the earthquake by the detection of the electrical field occurring at the same time of the earthquake.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
