PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new quaternary ammonium salt capable of imparting excellent flexibility to hair, good in biodegradability, and useful as a flexibility- imparting base agent. ;SOLUTION: This compound of formula I (R¹, R², R³ are each a 1-4C alkyl, etc.; R⁴, R⁵ are each H, a 1-36C alkyl, etc., wherein the sum of the numbers of the carbon atoms in R⁴ and R⁶ is each 8-36; A is a 2-3C alkylene; X is a cation; n is 1-6; m is 0-20). The compound of formula I is obtained by esterifying a hydroxy compound of formula II with a compound of the formula: Y-(CH₂)_n- COOR⁷ (R⁷ is H, a 1-4C alkyl; Y is a halogen) and subsequently reacting the obtained halo ester with a tertiary amine. The compound of formula I can impart excellent flexibility to fibers and further excellent flexibility and smoothness to hair.
