PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means of selectively chemically modifying the C terminal site of ε-polylysine.;SOLUTION: This process for producing a chemically modified ε-polylsine represented by formula (3) {wherein R2 is R3O-, R3S- or R3R4N- (wherein R3 is alkyl, aryl or aralkyl; and R4 is H, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl); and n is 2 or greater} comprises the steps of: (α) urethanizing ε-polylysine with an alkyloxycarbonylating agent to give a urethanized ε-polylysine; (β) chemically modifying the urethanized ε-polylysine by using its C terminal site to give a chemically modified urethanized ε-polylysine; and (γ) subjecting the chemically modified urethanized ε-polylysine to dealkyloxycarbonylation to give a chemically modified ε-polylysine.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
