USE OF THE MAIZE X112 MUTANT AHAS 2 GENE AND IMIDAZOLINONE HERBICIDES FOR SELECTION OF TRANSGENIC MONOCOTS, MAIZE, RICE AND WHEAT PLANTS RESISTANT TO THE IMIDAZOLINONE HERBICIDES.
A system for transformation of maize X112 mutant ahas2 gene into monocot (rice, corn, and wheat) cells, selection of transformed cells with the imidazolinone class of herbicide compound, and production of transgenic maize, rice and wheat plants resistant to the imidazolinone herbicides is described. The mutant ahas2 gene can be used as an effective selectable marker in transformation, useful in selection for stacked gene traits, useful as a selectable marker in breeding or hybrid seed production, and useful as a quality control tool.
