The normal operation of the transmission is interrupted at any time by an adaptation phase in which the axial clamping force is reduced to a level at which a given degree of movement, e.g. drive belt slip, between one of the pulleys (1,2) and the drive belt (3) occurs and in which a value for an operating parameter of the transmission is relate to the level. An independent claim is also included for a continuously variable transmission.
