The invention relates to a process for obtaining the 1,7-dimethyl-nonyl propanoate racemic, sexual pheromone of the corn rootworm Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte-Coleoptera, Chrisomelidae, consisting in preparing 2-bromobutyl-magnesium by the reaction of the 2-bromobutane with magnesium, the organomagnesium reagent in tetrahydrofuran reacts with the 6-bromohexyl-trimethyl-silyl ether, and the resulting (7-methyl-nonyl)-trimethylsilyl ether is acidified with HCl to obtain 7-methyl-nonanol which is then converted into 7-methyl-nonanal by gentle oxidation, using pyridinium chlorochromate, in methylene chloride solution, and by the reaction of said branched aldehyde with the methyl-magnesium bromide resulting by dropping at slight reflux and the methyl bromine in ether over the magnesium, there is obtained the 1,7-dimethyl-nonan-1-ol secondary alcohol which is esterified by the reaction with the propionyl chloride, by adding propionyl chloride to an alcohol solution in pyridine, while cooling with ice, the 1,7-dimethyl-nonyl propanoate being obtained thereby.
