Process for preparing activated carbon by physical mixture of carbonaceous precursors with sodium hydroxide or mixtures sodium hydroxide / potassium hydroxide.; The process comprises mixing a carbonaceous precursor with an activating agent in solid form selected from sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide mixtures / sodium hydroxide and carbonizing the resulting material. Activated carbons are prepared essentially microporous and can be used in applications involving gas-phase adsorption, and energy storage, both high pressure gases as in double layer capacitors (EDLC).
