The conditioner has shut off valves provided at high and low pressure pipes to shut off a flow of a refrigerant between an outdoor and an indoor unit, when a leakage detector senses a refrigerant leakage. The refrigerant within the indoor unit is restored into the outdoor unit by operating a compressor while closing the valves when the leakage is detected. An independent claim is also included for a method of controlling an air conditioner.
