PURPOSE: An advanced wastewater treatment apparatus and a method using a non-powered internal and external circulation unit are provided, wherein the non-powered internal and external circulation unit performs internal return for denitrifying and external return for phosphorous release. CONSTITUTION: The apparatus comprises an anaerobic zone(2) for releasing phosphorous from a mixture of treated sludge and inflow water, an anoxic zone(3) for denitrifying NO3 and removing nitrogen gas from the water overflown from the anaerobic zone(2), an aerobic zone(4) for oxidizing nitrogen residual contained in the treated water of the anoxic zone(3), a sedimentation tank(5) for settling the outflow of the aerobic zone(4), thereby separating solid component in wastewater as sludge, an effluent tank(6) for sterilizing the decant water of the sedimentation tank and then discharging the sterilized water, an internal circulation pipe for returning the sludge settled in the sedimentation tank to the anoxic zone(3), an external circulation pipe for returning the sludge of the sedimentation tank(5) to the anaerobic zone(2) and a sludge thickener for thickening excess sludge from the sedimentation tank(5).
