A similar-on-demand video system simultaneously activates multiple user groups. The system provides multiple versions of the same film with a certain mutual time difference. The film is stored on the disk with segments 302 and 304, each segment having a series of physically contiguous data blocks 306-312. The system physically fetches the segments from the disk and places them in a buffer for the user group. The system according to the present invention stores data blocks 308 to 312 representing one and the same mutual time difference as the time difference in one segment 302 so that the read segments include data blocks for different user groups. As a result, the duration of the system is reduced and less buffer storage capacity is required.
