The method involves determining a common desired value for the desired position of a camshaft for a group of camshafts. The group consists of camshafts that operate corresponding valves. The camshafts of the group can be regulated by camshaft regulators according to a reference position. The real position of the camshafts of the group is determined and a measure for the difference of the real positions of the camshafts within the group is determined. The regulation to the common desired value by the camshaft regulator of the group is carried out dependent on the measure. Independent claims are also included for (1) Control element for a control apparatus of a combustion engine (2) Combustion engine with several cylinder banks.
