In at least one operating state of the internal combustion engine an ideal value is formed for the output variable dependent on the ratio between a predetermined value of an operating variable of the engine (1) for one operating state and a momentary value of this operating variable whereby the ideal value thus formed is only converted over an air path (5) of the engine. A highly dynamic change of the ideal value is converted over a path (10) of the engine which is synchronised with the crankshaft. Independent claim describes device with means (20) for forming ideal value which is then converted only over an air path of the engine.
