During operation of ballast for gas discharge lamp (LA) in one phase two capacitors (C2,C3) are charged in series with rectified mains voltage (UNETZ) and in further phase are discharged in parallel into an intermediate circuit .The circuit supplies inverter (DC/AC) for energizing a load circuit (LK), containing. the gas discharge lamp, whose power tapping is synchronously modulated to zero passages of mains voltage. Preferably, the rated value for power proportional magnitude of load circuit depends on actual value of intermediate voltage circuit (UR3). Independent claims are included for gas discharge lamp.
