Method for generating an IPDS (intelligent printer data stream) data stream in which print data for a number of pages to be printed are joined together using IPDS commands and respectively assigned to a level, whereby each individual level has a specific operation number. A link exists between each level and operation number so that the level numbers are uniquely assigned to an operation number and the link can be used to determine which operation is assigned to a specific level. The invention also relates to a corresponding software product and computer for generating an IPDS data stream.
