The monitoring system determines how much dirt is trapped in the sieve (11) in a dishwasher (1). The sieve is fitted over a drain (5) with a fluid connection (7) to a pump (8). The pump is connected to a control computer (20) with a calculating circuit (23) and may be run for two different periods at different speeds. The flow of the fluid through the sieve as shown by the changes in the fluid level (6) is monitored. The system includes a pressure sensor (21) and an ultrasonic sensor (22).
