Method for tracking the transport of goods or goods containers has the following steps: the current state of the goods or goods container are described using a unique status value, which is generated from a combination of independent partial states; the structure of the status value character string is defined based on the independent partial states including movement through the transport chain; completeness; integrity and other explanations or specifications; whereby for each partial state discrete values are defined from which a multi-dimensional status space results with multiple possible values.
