Method for producing a diffusion weighed magnetic resonance tomography image has the following steps: measurement and storage of non-diffusion weighted and diffusion weighted data sets using a double echo steady state (DESS) sequence, whereby for the non weighted data set, two read gradients are switched sequentially, while for the weighted set, two read gradients of a bipolar diffusion gradient pulse are switched. Further steps are ; calculation of a diffusion weighted magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) image based on the two data sets and a diffusion weighted measurement of a characteristic value. An Independent claim is also include for a MRT unit.
