Method for avoiding piston knocking in a combustion engine has the following steps: a data evaluation unit uses sensor measurements and or computer calculated operating parameters to calculate mixture parameters; the parameters are compared with reference values; and engine operation is adjusted to maximize combustion and performance without any risk of knocking occurring.
