Electrically activated motor vehicle brake has a brake piston (30) that is applied against at least one friction lining (14, 14') and a brake disk (16). An arrangement (44) is provided for detecting the retracted position of the piston in which a predefined air gap (Lneu) is maintained. An electronic control unit for control of the brake activation motor (20) monitors operating parameters of the brake system, the electric brake motor and the vehicle itself and optimizes brake gear elements (26', 28') driven by the motor so that brake response time is optimized. An Independent claim is made for a method for controlling a motor vehicle electrically-operated braking system in which the distance (Aneu) between brake gear elements (26') and the brake piston is optimized when the brake is not being operated.
