A 3-way catalytic converter heats up for a direct-injection spark-ignition Otto internal combustion engine and jet-controlled combustion. An amount of fuel injected during a cold start is divided into two injection actions (IA). The first IA occurs on an intake stroke to produce a lean fuel-air mixture in the whole combustion chamber and the second immediately prior to ignition point of time.
