For the hybrid chemical shift imaging (CSI) operation, for use with a magnetic resonance apparatus, an excess volume is used to give the volume of interest (VOI), for selection using an anatomical magnetic resonance overview image. To generate magnetic resonance signals which can be analyzed by spectrometry, all the matter of interest is excited in the volumes of interest. The saturation volumes (VB1-VB4), arranged in strips around the volume of interest, are taken into account, where the thickness gives a resonance difference between water and fat, and ensure that no undesired magnetic resonance signals emerge from outside the volume of interest.
