An acoustic monitoring system (20a, b) compares signal measurements from sensors, which may be present upstream, downstream, or at both locations, with a database of pre-determined measurements on clean, fouled, and damaged filters. Pressure sensors (16a, b), and/or temperature probes (18) may be installed at the filter. An Independent claim is included for acoustically monitoring a combustion engine exhaust gas filter.
