The resection instrument for surgical removal of growths and polyps has an enlarged end cap (2) on a mounting stub (5). The cap has a chamfered rim (7) with an inwardly turned flange (11) with tongues (11b) holding a loop of a cord (22) which can be pulled tight to cut off a polyp. The cord passes through a flexible pipe (9) to the proximal end of the instrument. Suction may be applied to pull the tissue into the cap, after which the cord is pulled tight.
