Compressive/tractional forces are applied to a workpiece (1) made up of electrically conductive and/or magnetizable material. A magnetic field applied to the workpiece has a gradient in the direction of the force to be applied. A current supplies a coil structure (5a-5d) designed to produce a magnetic field with a gradient. An independent claim is also included for a device for applying compressive and/or tractional forces to a rod-shaped workpiece.
