A luminescent material comprises an alkaline earth thiosilicate doped with europium of the formula: EA2-xSiS4: Eux, where EA = Sr, Ca or Mg; and x = 0.005-0.05. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a luminescence conversion LED containing the above luminescent material; and (2) an illuminating unit containing the above LED.
