To prepare fabric for dyeing as a gathered hank, the fabric (X1) is first gathered (17) and then wrapped with yarn in one or more wrapping stations (B1, B2), e.g. in opposite directions. Optionally some false twist is then inserted (C) before the hank (X3) proceeds to a hank dyeing machine. The wrapping stations (B1, B2) have a rotating cage (6) that carries yarn bobbins (9). The rotating cage (6) is mounted on a hollow shaft (2) and is driven (5) from the outside. The hank passes through the shaft (2) and the wrapping yarn is fed through yarn tensioners (10).
