Heat exchanger operating according to the heat/pipe principle comprises at least one heating tube (8) for removing or supplying heat with a pre-determined temperature up to heat removal or supply. The hermetically sealed heating tube is filled with a working medium and a gas. The gas in the heating tube lies under a pre-pressure determined for the use of the heat exchanger relative to the start of boiling of the working medium. During heat removal the heating tube reaches with its lower end into the medium to be cooled or during heat supply into the energy-supplying medium. The medium with the higher temperature is separated from the medium with the lower temperature by at least one sealed pipe base (5). The heating tube is arranged so that condensed steam in the heating tube flows back by gravity and/or capillary action. An independent claim is also included for an alternative heat exchanger. Preferred Features: The heat exchanger, especially the hermetically sealed heating tube, is made of high-grade steel. The gas is an inert gas, preferably nitrogen.
