The automatic bobbin winder has a holder (1) to hold and detach a full bobbin (2). At a bobbin change, a bar (7) disengages the reciprocating yarn guide (3). A friction roller (4) drives the bobbin as the bobbin sleeve (6) is locked by cups (5). A bobbin sleeve supply (8) is at the winding station. For a bobbin change, the yarn tension is relaxed until a new bobbin winding cycle starts. The yarn tension is eased as the bobbin speed decelerates at the end of the winding cycle or when the bobbin rotation has stopped.
