Compression and filtering of geophysical events in oil exploration involves forming synthetic variables from available data, to generate an ortho-normalized vectorial base used for filtering and describing the events
Families of variables derived from geophysical events are used to form a lower number of synthetic variables by constructing an orthogonal vectorial base in each of a number of analyzing sets consisting of data from each of the families, to generate an ortho-normalized vectorial base describing the sets. The ortho-normalized vectorial base is used to filter and describe the events. Compression and filtering of three-dimensional geophysical events recorded in the form of a number of sets of available geophysical traces, obtained by exploration of an underground region, comprises: (a) dividing the geophysical events into a certain number 'p' of families of geophysical variables each having a particular physical significance; (b) combining the geophysical variables to form synthetic variables much lower in number than the number of seismic variables, and obtained by construction of an orthogonal vectorial base in each of 'p' analyzing sets consisting of data from each of the families, to derive the formation of an ortho-normalized vectorial base describing the analyzing sets.; and (c) utilizing the ortho-normalized vectorial base to filter and describe the geophysical events.
